Abstract :

Multi-organizational collaborations are increasingly important in contemporary science, but their formative processes have been neglected by scholars in the social studies of science. Based on an examination of 53 collaborations in physics and related disciplines, we have found 5 types of formations. Collaborations that encountered greater difficulties in forming became more formal in their organization and management.
