Abstract :

This article focuses on the interactions that bind a collection of large research collaborations situated in interconnected laboratories. The collaborations under consideration planned, built, and used three large detectors (the TPC, CDF, and CLAS) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Fermilab, and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, respectively, and one (UA1) at the European high energy physics lab, CERN. Taken together, these collaborations indicate how size, national context, type of science, and changing times affect the planning, building, and use of large-scale equipment.
