Brief Description of the Collaboratory :

The aim of CAST is to promote interaction and collaboration between UK atmospheric scientists. CAST is sponsored by the Atmospheric Science and Technology Board (ASTB) of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The project provides a platform for collaboration between groups at geographically remote sites and ensure NERC is well placed to exploit new networked based technologies at the start of the new millenium. This project will utilise and develop new networked based techniques and tools not only to improve the ease of collaboration between geographically separate groups but also to develop new methods of remote working which will significantly enhance the research environment for atmospheric scientists.

CAST was initially based at the Department of Chemisty at Leeds university, where the overall aim was to use this project to test the ideas of group working and interaction on a common project from remote sites. The proposed test problems were more limited than eventual applications, but provided an adequate proof of concept.

The project is now hosted by the BADC where the main objective is to use the tools developed and tested at Leeds to start an operational collaboratory. The software use for CAST is a mixture of in-house and off the shelf products.

Update 8/29: This project seems to no longer be called CAST, but is simply the "Community" page on the BADC site, and looks to have no major updates for several years. Several of the tools have been discontinued and the Website notes that this is because there are several other free alternatives.
