Brief Description of the Collaboratory :

The Centre for Medical Systems Biology (CMSB) is a joint activity of Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden University, Free University Medical Center and Free University Amsterdam, Erasmus MC Rotterdam and TNO Leiden, aiming to apply innovative multidisciplinary genomics and bioinformatics approaches to improve diagnosis, therapy and prevention of common and rare diseases.

The CMSB operates under general directorship of Professor dr. Gert-Jan B. van Ommen (LUMC).
Dr. Frans van der Touw (LUMC) is administrative manager.
The CMSB research is structured in five complementary research platforms:

Epidemiology
Systems Biology
Technology
Model Systems
Clinical Applications
integrated by a central coordinating platform:
Data Integration, Analysis and Logistics (DIAL)
and one encompassing activity aimed at:
Societal Aspects of Genomics (MAG-CMSB)

The first two platforms have their main emphasis on the discovery phase of their reseach.
The next two platforms focus on the validation phase, and the clinical platform aims at the translational phase, where clinical trials are performed. The DIAL platform has a coordinating function and the societal platform has as its focus the effects of public implementation of innovative medical knowledge and treatments.
