Brief Description of the Collaboratory :

COSEE-NE sought to strengthen the New England region's capacity to develop and provide high-quality ocean science education in both formal and informal settings by understanding the needs of, working with, and facilitating interactions among educators, researchers, and the public. Their long term goal was to strengthen understanding and appreciation of the oceans and their importance in audiences of all ages in both informal and formal education settings.

COSEE-NE enhanced New England's capacity for ocean science education by:

Fostering interactions between research and education communities
COSEE-NE developed innovative models for workshops, programs, and follow up strategies that enable researchers and educators to work together to define and achieve common goals.

Researching and developing practices for engaging scientists in ocean science education
COSEE-NE conducted needs assessments of scientists and educators; studies expert models and national, state, and local education guidelines; and develops and evaluates new models.

Sharing best practices in ocean science education
COSEE-NE developed high quality, robust and adaptable models for formal and informal education that convey key concepts in the ocean sciences, and shares these approaches throughout the ocean science and education community.

Catalyzing the formation of lasting cooperative partnerships
COSEE-NE built partnerships with institutions throughout the New England region that enable ocean scientists and educators to collaborate more effectively by supporting collaborations; sponsoring workshops and conferences; and using the web and other electronic vehicles to increase information sharing and collaboration.

Access to People as Resources :

COSEE-NE developed several innovative ways for helping ocean scientists, informal science educators and K-12 educators to offer high-quality opportunities in ocean science education:

Teen Apprenticeship Program at the New England Aquarium, with the goal to develop a model for other informal educational institutions. The program, developed in conjunction with the Massachusetts Mentoring Partnership, includes programming for scientists and teens alike.

Communicating Ocean Science In the Spring semester of 2006, WHOI biologist Lauren Mullineaux teamed up with COSEE-CA to offer a course titled Communicating Ocean Sciences, recognizing graduate students’ interest in becoming more effective at conveying their oceanographic world.

WHOI Education & Outreach Matching Funds Pilot Program The availability of matching funds is making all the difference in helping WHOI scientists develop innovative outreach activities that get their research out to the public.

New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC)- A collaboration among a range of institutions from across the region, including museums and aquaria, universities, and research institutions.

Ocean Science Education Institute (OSEI) - bringing educators and ocean scientists together to create effective marine-based curriculum.

Telling Your Story (TYS) - preparing scientists for the classroom visit.

Sharing the Challenge (StC) - bringing ocean scientists and informal educators together to create exciting, contemporary exhibits.

Science of Learning Seminar - exploring the oceans of the learner's mind.

Inquiry in Education Workshop - This workshop was designed to help scientists bring their natural expertise in inquiry to educational activities.
